Today I want to talk about two greatest persons its John Tolkien and Daniel Defoe. Let’s start with Defoe; he was born in the parish of St. Giles Cripple gate London, in a family of tallow chandler James Fo. Defoe's early life he experienced first-hand some of the most unusual occurrences in English history: in 1665, 70,000 people were killed by the Great Plague of London. On top of all these catastrophes, the Great Fire of London in 1666. In 1667, when Defoe was probably about seven years old, a Dutch fleet sailed up the Medway via the River Thames and attacked Chatham. All of this happened before Defoe was around seven years old, and by the time he was about thirteen years old, Defoe's mother had died. His parents were Presbyterian dissenters and he was educated in a Dissenting Academy at Newington Green, but later church career has been compelled to refuse.
Defoe's literary activity began with political pamphlets and articles in newspaper and was proved as talented satirist-publicist. Especially wide popularity Defoe acquired since appearance of his pamphlet «the True Englishman». About eighty thousand copies had been half legally sold in streets of London within several days. And it’s just his early life. He became a writer only at 59 years. And his most famous novel is a «Robinson Crusoe», and it tells about man who got shipwreck, landed on deserted island and about his subsequent adventures. The novel has been variously read as an allegory for the development of civilisation, as a manifesto of economic individualism, and as an expression of European colonial desires. But it also shows the importance of repentance and illustrates the strength of Defoe's religious convictions.
And it is high time to talk about following person. His name is John Tolkien. He was born on 3 January 1892 in Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State. In 1900 Tolkien enters in school of King Edward, where he has learnt Old English language and started to study others — Welsh, Old Norwegian, Finnish and gothic. He found his linguistic talent, after studying Old Welsh and Finnish languages and after, he started to develop «Elven» language. In 1914 he was called up for military service. John endured bloody fight on Somme, where he lost two his best friends from «tea club» and he begun to hate wars and in addition he caught typhus, after long treatment was sent to home with physical inability. His most famous work is «The Hobbit or There and Back Again». With this book Tolkien was included into the literature. The book has originally arisen as product for a family circle. Tolkien started to tell a fairy tale about the hobbit to his children. Almost accidentally this tale got to the press, the history about adventures of hobbit Bilbo Baggins has unexpectedly won wide popularity among readers of all age. Now this book is known as an original prologue of «the Lord of the Ring».
John Tolkien and Daniel Defoe had a more differences neither similarities. They have different lives and different styles. Defoe was a satirist-publicist and wrote in realistic style. He was not married and have no children. And in addition he was prisoned. As for Tolkien, he is writer fantast. Was married and had four children. Took part in the First World War. Their greatest similarity is that they had a hard childhood and their mothers died when they were young. At the end I want to add that these two persons are widely known by a lot of readers and cinema fan’s. Because their most famous novel was picturized and won a great popularity among cinema fan’s of all age.
